![]() (Can it be true? Is the mullet a step forward in the evolutionary process?) Individuality certainly plays a big part in this – after all, part of what makes us different from apes is the simple, undeniable fact that they don't go around inventing wacky new hairstyles to stand out from the crowd. In "Bartleby the Scrivener," Herman Melville asks his readers to consider this very same question of what makes us human. After all, what is literature but the study of human nature? What is writing but a means for expressing the ideas of a unique, individual mind? But don't blame us if it distracts you from your studies for too long this is one of the most valuable things you can do as a student of literature. ![]() Observe what makes each of us different – what makes each of us individually articulated, completely unique human beings. Take a minute to stop and look around at the people you interact with every day…sit back and people watch for a while. What is Bartleby the Scrivener About and Why Should I Care? Is it simply a comment on the oddities of human nature? Is it sufficient to look at the story as a scathing mockery of the writings of Melville's contemporaries, Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, whose specific brand of self-reliance and independence might be seen in Bartleby's stubbornness? Or can we perhaps even see Melville himself in the infuriatingly fascinating character of Bartleby? The critics all seem to have different opinions on this question – how about you? The true meaning of "Bartleby" has been discussed and dissected by critics everywhere, ever since its first publication. "Bartleby" is a departure from the sea-faring adventures that Melville often presented to readers in fact, this is a story in which the most exciting thing that happens is actually the fact that nothing really happens. ![]() Published in 1853, " Bartleby the Scrivener" is one of American writer Herman Melville's most often-read and studied works (which is really saying a lot, considering that the guy also penned numerous classics, including Moby-Dick and Billy Budd). ![]() While this is nice, I felt that it is not that necessary given how straightforward everything is. ![]() On the first launch of Letterspace, users will go through a quick tutorial that shows the basics of the app. Overall, the design of Letterspace is top-notch. Your notes will be neatly organized in the list view, complete with line previews, and everything can be further organized with hashtags (#) and mentions It’s easy to get around in Letterspace too, since the app feels natural with swiping gestures. Personally, I found the default font size to be fine, but you can also tweak it to be smaller or larger. The default typeface is my favorite, Avenir, but there are other eight other fonts to choose from. There are other color themes available, though they are all sold individually through in-app purchases, with some being more expensive than others for reasons unknown. The default color scheme is a white background with light blue text and accent buttons, which works well. Letterspace features a minimal yet elegant look and feel to it, so the app is fairly pleasing to the eyes. While I have settled on my essential workflow, I can’t help but check out new writing apps that hit the market, and so I was intrigued with what Letterspace had to offer, since it was talked about a bit over the weekend. However, even though these are my preferred tools, they’re not especially suited for basic note-taking, except for Drafts. On my MacBook Pro, I like to use Byword for writing articles. On iOS, my writing app of choice is Editorial, with Drafts 4 for the quick jot notes. Over the years, I’ve gone through dozens of writing apps for iOS, and several on Mac, but I’ve settled on some essentials that are part of my daily workflow. I love writing - that’s why I love my job here at AppAdvice. It is similar to other apps out there like Fetchnotes and Simplenote. If you’re still in search of a quick note app that is right for you, then Letterspace is worth a look. There is also a companion Mac app so your notes can be accessed on your desktop. (Free) by Sittipon Simasanti is a beautifully crafted note-taking app that is a pleasure to use. We highly recommend it for all users.Letterspace – Swipe. Despite its lack of a viable help option, we think most users will be able to find their way around without any issues. Letterspace is an elegant solution for taking notes and keeping track of important tasks. The website did offer a few explanations of its features, but they were geared toward the mobile version of that app. It offers a link to its website, but nothing else in terms of an FAQ. Letterspace for Mac didn't have much in terms of a help feature. Unhelpful help: We always like to check out an app's help feature to find tips and tricks. We closed out of Letterspace without purposely saving, and our work was right where we left it when we reopened it. Just type a dash, followed by square brackets and your text. Interactive to-do lists: Letterspace uses its own syntax to let you create interactive to-do lists. ![]() Mando leaves Koresh for the local fauna-which look a little like the light-averse fyrnocks from Rebels and The Clone Wars-and sets course for the planet farthest from the bright center to the universe but closest to the center of Star Wars.Īccording to Koresh, the mysterious Mandalorian resides in Mos Pelgo, not to be confused with the more familiar Moses, Eisley and Espa. The iconographer is expected to fast, pray, and live a holy life so as to be capable of expressing sacred and divine mysteries. The painting (more properly called writing) of icons is a special vocation. In this sense, the icon has been called "a meeting between heaven and earth". By inspiring his icons with life and strength, Ushakov was unable to withstand the secularization of his iconography. This style, however, ultimately worked counter to his intentions. ![]() But he did this while uniting traditional Byzantine formulas (flattened figures in hieratic poses) with the chiaroscuro and perspective of Western painting, as was also done in the Greco-Italian iconography that Ushakov favoured. Ushakov believed, like many other icon painters, that the saints in icons should look revived and illuminated, and indeed, critics agree that he did manage to fill his icons with feeling and light. In the spirit of the reforms of Patriarch Nikon, who strove to bring the Russian church in line with the traditions of Greek Orthodoxy, Ushakov in his icons chose to reflect the countenances of Greek icons, many of which had been brought from the Orthodox east, and of old Russian icons that had been painted in the Greek style. He also worked at times for other churches, monasteries, and private patrons. In addition to a multitude of frescoes for the churches of the Kremlin and palace buildings, icons for the imperial family, and portraits of them, Ushakov painted icons for his local church, the aforementioned Church of the Trinity in Nikitniki, throughout his life.
